WORLD CRICKET LEAGUE DIVISION 3: OMAN v MALAYISA
OMAN 293/7 in 50 overs (Naseem Kushi 77(30), Aaqib Ilyas 61(76), Sultan Ahmed 51(69), Khizar Hayat 2/23 in 10 overs) beat MALAYSIA 162/10 in 33.1 overs (Anwar Arudin57(35), Shafiq Sharif 33(47), Khawar Ali 5/23 in 8.1 overs, Munis ansari 4/47 in 9 overs) by 131 runs.
Oman playing for a place in the final lost the toss and Malaysia put them in to bat; Malaysia fighting to stave off relegation.
Oman lost big hitter Khawar Ali early on LBW but still got off to a flyer with Aaqib Ilyas 61(76) and Jatinder Singh 44(66) flaying the Malaysia opening bowlers to all parts square of the wicket putting on 97 for the second wicket; Ilyas particularly brutal on anything short in front or behind square scoring six boundaries.
The two set batsmen got into a mix up and Jatinder got run out by Pavandeep Singh non too pleased with his batting partner who had made the false call.
Ilyas was eventually bowled by Khizar Hayat who has shown exemplary discipline with his line and length throughout the tournament.
The wicket then begun to take extra ordinary turn and bounce and Malaysia turned to Pavandeep Singh, Abdul Muhammad Shukri and Virandeep Singh to go through the middle overs.
Captain Sultan Ahmed and middle order dependable Ajay Lalcheta 24(36) rebuilt the Oman innings and kept the run rate at 5 an over, working the ball through mid-wicket and backward of point waiting on the ball deep in the crease to pick their gaps.
Shukri was able to draw Lalcheta out of his crease with some good loop on the ball wicket Keeper Shafiq Sharif completing the job with an easy one handed stumping.
Sultan held the innings together to the end for the seventh wicket with Naseem Kushi 77(30) who put on a late order show of hard hitting to push Oman past 250 runs and eventually to 293 with a 70 run stand for the eighth wicket with Mohammad Nadeem.
Malaysia went after their target with intent and purpose, burly opener Anwar Arudin 57(35) attacking Anis Munsari and Bilal Khan with vicious pull shots and expansive drives over the inner circle on a hot sunny afternoon with the run rate flying at 10 an over; the problem is he kept losing partners and most importantly captain Faiz Ahmed 4(5) who was picked by Naseem Kushi off Ansari’s bowling.
Shafiq Sharif 33(47) took charge after Ansari had Arudin caught behind and his 31 run stand for the sixth wicket with Khizar Hayat 28(54) looked like holding off defeat only a little bit longer as the Omani bowlers and fielders had their tails up.
Captain Sultan turned to Khawar Ali on the turning wicket and the big off spinner who had failed in his role as pinch hitter picked five cleaning up the tail picking two batsmen for a duck to ensure Oman will enter the finals with the psychological advantage of a win over Canada who fell to Singapore by two runs at Kyambogo.
Man of Match Khawar Ali; “I would like to thank Allah who made this possible, I am happy for the team, the wicket was taking turn and I just found the right line and length and it all went according to plan.”
Oman Captain sultan Ahmed; “It has been a long journey and hard work for all the boys, I thank Allah and we are very happy to make it to Division 2, we will now get ready for the final.”
Malayisa Captain Faiz ahmed; “We lost altogether, except for Canada, so it is quite disappointing for Malaysia cricket, our players did not apply ourstrengths, we didn’t do our work well, of course Oman played very well today, they showed how to play 50 over cricket aggressively and positively and we see that with good cricket, 300 is achievable.”
